A page that clearly states "Our platform processes 2.3 million transactions daily with 99.97% uptime" gives the AI engine a concrete, citable fact. A page that says "We are a leading provider of enterprise solutions" gives it nothing useful.
3. Entity Recognition and Knowledge Graphs
AI engines maintain internal representations of entities: companies, products, people, concepts. The strength of your brand entity, how well-defined and well-connected it is in these knowledge graphs, directly affects citation likelihood.
Building entity strength requires consistent information across your website, structured data markup, Wikidata presence, and consistent mentions across authoritative third-party sources. Inconsistency (different product names on different pages, conflicting founding dates, mismatched leadership information) weakens entity recognition.
4. Content Depth and Specificity
AI engines preferentially cite sources that provide specific, verifiable information. Vague marketing copy performs poorly. Content that includes named methodologies, specific data points, clear definitions, and structured comparisons performs well.
This is why technical documentation, detailed case studies, and methodology pages outperform generic product pages in AI citations. The AI needs material it can confidently extract and present.
The Current Citation Leaders, and What They Did Right
Across the 14 B2B categories we track, citation leaders share common characteristics. They publish content at 3 to 5 times the depth of category averages. They have backlink profiles dominated by editorial links from industry publications rather than directory listings. They maintain structured data markup on over 90% of their pages. And they update core content pages at least quarterly.
None of this is accidental. These are the organisations that recognised the relationship between SEO authority and AI citation early and built accordingly.
What CMOs Should Do With This Information
First, audit your current AI citation status. Not anecdotally, query by query. You need to know where you are being cited, where competitors are cited instead, and where nobody in your category appears at all. The gaps are the opportunities.
Second, stop producing content that AI engines cannot use. If your blog posts are 400-word summaries with no specific data, no named methodologies, and no structured markup, you are generating content for humans who will never find it and AI engines that cannot cite it.
Third, build the authority signals deliberately. This means investing in SEO as infrastructure, not as a tactical channel, because the same authority signals that drive organic rankings now drive AI citations.
